Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire you when I can just read the books and do this on my own?

Although the shelves are filled with books with a lot of good sleep advice, clients tell me they find books contradictory, confusing and not always applicable to their specific needs.   With my clinical background as an M.D. and training as a sleep consultant, and experience with 2000+ clients worldwide.  I can hone in on your child’s sleep problems; use a variety of behavioral techniques to teach you how to solve them; develop a personalized, step-by-step sleep plan;  and coach you along the way to ensure sleep success.  Please referhere   to see some of the common problems I can help you solve.  My goal is that by the end of our time together you will be happy with your investment in your family’s sleep!

How do your consultations work and what do they cost?

Please refer here for a detailed explanation of my sleep packages and costs.  I offer a variety of packages based on your needs and preferences.

At the start, I offer a free initial consult so I can learn more about your family’s sleep issues and talk to you about my process and how I can help you.  If you decide to move forward with a consult, I send you a detailed sleep assessment form.  The questions allow you to tell me about your family, focusing specifically on the sleep problems you hope to resolve.  Depending on what package  you have selected, I will either create a customized step-by-step sleep plan (phone and in-home consult), send you an email with my suggestions (email consult), or prepare for our phone call (phone only package) Once you begin, I provide extensive email or phone follow up  to answer questions(depending on the package), and reassure you that everything is on track for sleep success!

Contact me   for a free initial consult and I will be happy to discuss which package would work best for you.  rhk@babysleeppro.com

How long will it take for my child to start sleeping better?

Most sleep related issues can be resolved in about 2 weeks or less– as long as you consistently  follow my step-by-step sleep plan.   Some methods are faster, while others take more time, but no matter the technique, consistency is the key to success.

What is the best age to begin teaching my child how to sleep better?

Usually when your baby is about four months old. That’s when babies differentiate day and night and  begin to consolidate sleep into 2-3 recognizable naps during the day and longer, uninterrupted chunks at night   But it’s never too early to lay the foundation for good sleep. I have many helpful suggestions for both expectant parents and parents of newborns for how to implement good sleep habits and avoid sleep problems from the start.

Do you only work with babies? Do you work with twins?

I have extensive experience with  toddlers, multiple children, and twins through age 6, as well as expectant parents and parents of newborns.

Won’t my baby eventually fall asleep if he is tired enough?

Actually, the opposite is true:  the more tired a baby gets, the harder it is to fall asleep.  To fight fatigue, babies (and adults) produce a hormone called cortisol that gives them a second wind and makes it more difficult to fall asleep.  The goal is to help  children fall asleep before they become overtired.  I will help you understand how to gauge your child’s internal sleep rhythms  so you can create an age-appropriate schedule and an ideal sleeping environment.

Do I have to let my baby “cry it out”?

Not unless you want to. I have success using many different strategies to help parents teach their children to sleep. The best technique for your family is based on your goals, your tolerance for crying,  as well as your child’s temperament.  After I learn more about your family and your goals, I will create a step-by-step personalized sleep plan  that you will feel comfortable to implement. That being said, remember crying is a natural way to for a baby to protest change!

What if I don’t live near you?

No problem at all!  Though I am based in Chicago, I have helped over 3,500 families in 24 countries, 35 states, and 5 continents achieve better sleep. I often do phone/skype/facetime/email consults with clients in different time zones and countries.  Please refer to my packages  and contact me for a free consult to discuss what methods works best for your schedule.
